The United Kingdom & Ireland

 The United Kingdom is made up of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The Republic of Ireland doesn't belong to the United Kingdom, as it is a sovereign country itself.

Interesting & Fun Facts about England

 People in England are known to enjoy drinking tea, eating fish & chips and watching football. 

Because of its long history, there are lots of fun and interesting facts about England. 

Let's find out about a few fun facts with Jozef Alexander, a 12-year-old student from London, England, currently living in the Algarve, Portugal.

Here are other interesting facts:

- The first King of England made a law that everyone had to be in bed by 8 o´clock p.m.

- French was the official language of England for 300 years (from 1066 until 1362).

- 165 million cups of tea per day are consumed in the United Kingdom.

- Windsor Palace is the oldest and largest castle in the world that is occupied.

- There is an annual cheese rolling competition at Gloucestershire's Cooper's Hill, where people literally chase and try to catch a rolling cheese - can you believe this?

- London was the first city in the entire world to have an underground subway system.

- Thought London was the first capital city of England? Guess again! The first one was Winchester, chosen as the capital in 1519.

- The Queen Elizabeth II owns all the swans on the river Thames. The counting of the swans is done every year by the "Keeper of the Queen's Swans", which is an actual job. Unbelievable, right? 

- The World Wide Web was invented by an English scientist named Tim Berners-Lee. It's due to him that we can keep in touch through the Internet!

British English vs. American English

 One of the most common questions I've been asked by students is if the English language is exactly the same worldwide. Well... sorry to say but it's not! 

There are some differences as far as the vocabulary, the grammar, the spelling or the pronunciation are concerned. Let's find out some of these differences between British English and American English by watching the following video.
